Coona Skies

I am located in Coonabarabran which is a small town of about 3,000 people. It is located in Warrumbungle Shire, New South Wales, Australia. Coonabarabran is about 490 km north west of Sydney and is about 22 km from several observatories at Siding Spring.

A small observatory on my property contain the telescopes that I use to observe and photograph many heavenly objects whenever time permits.

This website displays useful information which might help others in their hobby of astronomy. It also displays a few of those photographs that I have taken, some of which are old and others which are relatively new.

Please note that dates displayed on this website are in day/month/year format as is the custom in Australia. For example 9 March 2016 would be shown as 9/3/2016.

There are several items that are accessed from the "Observing Aids" page which can help in planning your observing session whether it be visual or photographic. These include a set of monthly sky charts which you can download for viewing or printing, the Messier and Caldwell catalogues and a few tables that can help in determining the equipment you need to use for your astro-photography session. The information given here is not exhaustive but will be added to in time.

If you are interested in looking at the latest weather satellite images, they can be accessed from the "Weather Satellite Images" page. These images can be used to help determine if you are going have clear or cloudy skies during your planned observing session. These images are updated whenever one of the active NOAA weather satellites pass over my locality.

The "Astronomical Events" page displays a list of events that are going to occur in the future and that have occurred from the beginning of the year 2016. You can use this information to plan your future observing or astro-photography session. Please note all listed events are specifically relevant to Coonabarabran, but most of the items listed can also be relevant to you if you are located elsewhere as long as you modify their occurrence times for your location, as all times listed on this page are local to Coonabarabran. In general if an event will not be visible from Coonabarabran, it will not be shown, unless otherwise stated.

Then there is the "Photo Gallery" page which shows a few of the photographs I have taken. Some of the photographs might not be very good by todays standards, but are still displayed in order to show the difference between what I could do in the past and what I can do now with more modern equipment and computer software.

The "Links" page contains links to websites external to this one that you might find useful. Their contents are not controlled by me and as such the views expressed on them are not necessarily mine. Their contents are totally the responsibility of their respective owners.

Lastly but lot least, there is the "Downloads" page which you might find useful.
